Quail semifinals: Rose2 vs Iris
Back on top of it with today's pairing: quail! This one is, in my eyes, a bit easier than all of the others posted so far. The quail standard is written for the same structure across all varieties (or possible breeds...If you're curious what determines a separate breed, I'd love to talk with you more on this. I've had a few conversations with an Italian geneticist, Dr. Gianluca Marini, on what determines the two in poultry, rabbits, cattle, etc. for the coturnix standard) and overall very dual purpose: birds must be able to both lay well and provide a decent amount of meat when butchered. Most breeders, in the US especially, are centered around this expectation, and while egg-specific and terminal meat cull lines do exist worldwide, they aren't nearly as common or as narrow as the chicken species is, where meat birds will never lay eggs and egg production birds only work for stew. Therefore, you should be judging the birds with the same cut-apart idea as a dual purpose chicken breed, duck, guinea, or turkey.
