PAIRING 13: Rhode Island Reds

This is Day Thirteen of the March Madness poultry judging. For previous pairings, instructions, and a copy of the bracket, please see our other posts here.

Bantam Rhode Island Reds: RM3 and RF14

The last bantam pairing! Rhode Island Bantams from B's Garden Poultry. Originally called "Tripp fowls" or "Macomb fowls", they were named for the Tripp Farms in Rhode Island that is credited with creating them, though the breed may have come from a breeder in the Southern Massachusetts Poultry Association. Rhode Islands, in both their bantam and largefowl form, are bred for high egg production. Many of the hyline crosses used for largescale egg farms (Cinnamon Queen, Golden Comet, etc.) actually come from directly crossing Rhode Island to a white variety to get a sexlinked cross. Exhibition (or bred for show) Rhode Islands, while still focusing on high egg production, also emphasizes the heritage aspects of the breed: quality meat and overall health and hardiness of the fowl. This is true for both the largefowl and bantam counterparts, and is important to keep in mind when judging the two below.

Which would you choose for Best Rhode Island Red, and why?

Bre's Note:

Head's up, we are only three days away from the first round of eliminations! Your brackets will be due on the end of day 16 (before day 16 results are posted) to be eligible. I will be catching up on result postings on the 15th and 16th, just waiting on a few judging comments.

Thank you to Thieving Otter Farm for providing images of her rooster!
