PAIRING 12: Italian Quail

This is Day Twelve of the March Madness poultry judging. For previous pairings, instructions, and a copy of the bracket, please see our other posts here.

Italian Quail: Sunny and Davis

Italian quail, again a variety of the breed Coturnix quail, are known for their vibrant and bold markings. They are a mutation on the ASIP gene (also found in mice, insects, and people), which gives them that yellow color without "covering up" the feather sexable pattern. You can find more on quail genetics here if interested. These are again bred for meat and eggs, with eggs being a heavier focus. For a bit of a challenge, these two birds are from different breeders, showing different focus and aspects from both sides. While color can be an indication of breeding practices, ensure that type and structure come first and foremost in your judging--point values would be similar to guineas, with about 75% of the points going to structure, shape, and type, and less than 25% going to other areas like condition and color. This is more focused on structure than in chickens and waterfowl.

Which would you choose for Best Italian, and why?

Bre's Note:

Head's up, we are only four days away from the first round of eliminations! Your brackets will be due on the end of day 16 (before day 16 results are posted) to be eligible. I will be catching up on result postings on the 15th and 16th, just waiting on a few judging comments.

Thank you to Thieving Otter Farm for providing images of her rooster!
