JUDGING 2: Jersey Giants

These are the comments and results of Day Two of the March Madness poultry judging. For previous pairings, instructions, and a copy of the bracket, please see our other "blog" posts. All of the participant comments are available on our FB page and previous posts.

Note from Breanna:

This pairing was significantly easier. Not necessarily because the birds were any lesser, but more because one was much stronger than the other. Much of this is to do with the time of the year and age. A majority of the commenters were able to spot the same strengths and flaws that Mr. Becker did.

Top Participant Evaluations:

"Hen [wins for me]. Nice long back, better condition. Nice Size. I would like to see a picture with this male in better condition. Nice size overall but could use a longer back, as the cushion starts too close to the cape."

-Nadia Konesko

"The hen is closer to the SOP. The cockbird has light colored legs (it looks like the incorrect color on top of his feet), and has a v-shaped body (which should be more square shaped). I would like to see the bottoms of the feet on both... the SOP calls for yellow on the bottom of the feet."

-Marie Brietzke

"The hen is the overall best pick, better conditioned. I would honestly want to see her competition (hens and pullets). At first glance, the rooster really catches your eye, but isn't the best conditioned for how a jersey boy should be."

-Catherine Cleveland

Breeder Comments:

"Great feedback! I just started with Jersey Giants last year, so I am learning as well." Susan Buchanan

Judge's Evaluations:

"The Jersey Giant female has better type and tail set. The male needs more conditioning with his tail and wing feathers." Judge Brian Decker
